Dumping more money

Owning a motorhome is not a cheap endeavor nor is one where you never are doing maintenance. We just got back from a week long trip to Cape Cod. The weather was perfect and location was spot on. We boondocked two night prior to arriving in Provincetown and boondocked one night on our way back home. Getting to Provincetown we blew a brake line on the drivers rear wheels, very scary situation. Lucky for us we were in a parking lot when it happened. A local truck repair company dispatched a tech and got us bandaged up enough to hobble to their garage. Two hours later were back on the road, and only a few hundred dollars lighter!

Next came the water heater not working on AC power, but lucky for us the water heater will run on Propane. My hope was the wiring was still intact and would not have to remove the water heater from the coach to diagnose and repair the problem. I lucked out, the problem took an hour or so of working backwards trying to figure out why 115VAC wasn’t making it to the heating element. Eventually I removed the thermostat housing cover and sure enough, the AC thermostat was open. Easy repair, just waiting for Amazon to show up with the part. Not an expensive fix, under $15!

Thermistor is badly melted and open. Probably a bad crimp on the faston connector caused the connection to heat up over time.

Next came the refrigerator not cooling and hearing the fridge defender beeping and declaring “OPn”. Frazzled, I said screw it. We were at our final destination (a brewery in Ludlow Massachusetts), so in we went with our dogs and drank a bit. When I got home I figured out the OPn meaning ws the Fridge Defend was complaining that it’s thermistor was open. I diagnosed the issue and found the connector just needed to be reseated. Cost — Zero dollars.

The back side of the refrigerator. Looks like a mess but it actually is neatly tied off wiring. This system prevents the boiler from overheating and causing a fire.

Now tomorrow the coach goes in to have all the brake lines re-fitted with Super Duty Truck brake lines, all the coolant hoses changed out and system flushed and new coolant added. Hopefully this will get us some worry free driving.
